I used to think the whole Manny being Manny thing was a bit funny, but turning down 25 million for one year is just nuts. He and/or Boras needs to swallow their pride and take the one year deal and enjoy being the highest paid outfielder to ever play the game.

I agree with you. Manny being Manny was funny up until about 2 years ago, when he lost his love for the game. Ive seen all Manny antics (being from Boston) and I don't know why Boras and Manny think there going to get a long term contract with what he did to Boston.

It's not going to happen. I really hope the Dodgers take that $25 million and spend it on three or four different players. I was listening to something the other day mentioning how the Dodgers could potentially sign Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Randy Wolf, Ben Sheets, and Juan Cruz for about that same $25-$30 million dollars that they could spend on Manny. If that's the case, I would jump on taking those five players to fill multiple holes instead of Manny filling just one hole.
That would leave pretty much nobody out there that could afford Manny. The Giants would be the only team that would really want him, but they'd have no reason to bid against themselves so that would just further devalue Manny's market. He should've accepted that two-year $45 million deal the Dodgers offered back whenever.
I remember when he said, "Gas is up and so am I!" Well guess what, Manny? Gas is back down so I guess you are too. Have fun looking like a moron, if you don't sign with a team before opening day I'm just going to laugh and laugh some more.

Wow Tom that's crazy about the players they could get with that 25 mil. Hell, I'd take Dunn and Sheets over Manny alone. Throw in OHud, Cruz and Wolf and it's a no brainer.

It is crazy. Now that the Yankees are done signing all the top free agents, there's apparently very little money to be had. People are saying Adam Dunn will only get $5 million a year and Bobby Abreu is down to only $8 million. Who knows what Sheets will get and players like Wolf and Cruz can't be getting more than maybe $2-3 million at the most. Manny just doesn't seem to realize that baseball isn't recession proof and that $25 million is worth even more at this point in time.
I kind of like the recession baseball is going through though, even if it sucks for everyone else. Salaries were getting absolutely absurd, so it's nice to see them dropping to a much more reasonable level after the elite free agent's are signed.
Baseball's owners are still causing huge problems. The biggest in my opinion is the whole luxury tax debacle. Some teams have five times the salary of other teams and have no problems paying the luxury tax, while the smaller teams have greedy owners who just pocket that luxury tax cash they get instead of using it to improve their teams. That's a discussion for another time, though.

Ouch! Anybody else read the news on Ben Sheets possibly missing all of 2009 with elbow surgery? I just read it a few moments ago, talk about a big blow. I guess it makes sense why no one wanted to sign him, he's just too much of an injury risk.
So much for my hoping the Dodgers would go out and sign him and Dunn and maybe a few others instead of Manny. They still could, but with Sheets probably done for 2009 that makes the Dodgers far more likely to continue pursuing Manny.

Ouch is right, i own him and he cost $5. He better pitch this year and get surgery in the offseason.
